As an affiliate, you'll want to create content for your website which is relevant to the products you're promoting - this ensures that the people who visit your site will be interested in the kinds of products and services you are promoting. By appealing to people who are already likely candidates to buy from the merchant, you'll make far more sales; and thus commissions.
