Affiliate Marketing: What Is It?

Affiliate marketing is a marketing technique that uses one or more website affiliates to generate income for a website(s) in exchange for compensation. What this means is an of a website uses both online and offline methods of generating traffic – and sales – to their site.

How is marketers paid? After a sale is made on the affiliate’s site, the company who controls the site will pay the a small commission for their efforts. This is also called revenue sharing.


What is the pay range for a web affiliate? The affiliate’s commission depends on what the company has agreed to pay and how many sales he or she brings in. Typically, the more sales a webmaster brings in, the higher the commissions are. This can range between 10% on low-end sites and 60% on high-end, or specialty sites.

What methods do marketers use to promote their site? They use methods from medium to large email campaigns, placing

ads on search engines using links to their area, placing free ads on free sites (i.e. Craigslist, Kijiji, and Backpage) and placing videos on sites like YouTube.

What are its advantages? Even with the differences in pay, being an marketer has it advantages. One is you don’t have to pay a cent to maintain your site. You just pay for advertising. Also, if the customer doesn’t want the product he or she bought, you don’t have to worry about processing the refund.

What are its disadvantages? Clearly, the disadvantages here are that you get a small piece of the pie of the sale (except the high-end ones.) Another disadvantage is you can’t control when they pay you. For example, if the company does the entire payroll at a specific time (i.e. weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly), you’ll get paid then.

Some will even pay you, when you earn a certain amount in commissions. Is marketing right for you? The choice is yours.
